Video Review of Kota Beach Resort in Bantayan Island, Philippines

Kota Beach Resort is a 3 star, 34 roomed beach resort on the beautiful island of Bantayan Island in the north of Cebu, Philippines.  This was the very first resort I stayed in Bantayan Island back something like 15 years ago. It has changed quite a bit since then, most noticeably after Typhoon Yolanda back in 2013. The place was guttered and the cottages had to be rebuilt. You can see my video to get a better idea. What has always stayed constant is Kota Resort’s amazing beach front, a gorgeous white sandy beach. Although the sands do shift due to the winds and tides (see video) it always looks like paradise. To see the beach at its best come during the summer months when the monsoon winds blow on the other side of Bantayan. Being protected on this side, the waters remain calm and have these pristine aqua colours. It’s easy enough to walk along the beach here and you can see the other resorts along here. None of these resorts are big and flashy, so the place still has that nice laid back island feel.

Kota Resort has its own restaurant, breakfast is usually included with the room rates. I booked my room via Agoda which came with the breakfast (check conditions at time of booking). Unfortunately, I didn’t really try out the food at restaurant on this last occasion as I was out early for island hopping. From my previous stays here, I found the food OK. There are plenty of options of eating outside at Santa Fe, a small town only a short tricycle ride away (even possible to walk). There is a little market, a few stores and a few places to drink. It’s all fairly laid back. A couple of the establishments have a live band on the weekend.  There are a number of touts waiting outside the resort most times of the day, so it’s fairly easy to catch a ride into town. They can also organise motorbike rental and island hopping tours around Bantayan Island as well. It’s also possible to arrange with Kota Resort to a pick up and drop off from the pier. The pier is less than a 10 minute drive away.

Free WiFi is available in the lobby/restaurant area. There is also a billiard table.

My Review of Kota Beach Resort

If you are looking for simple beach accommodation on an amazing tropical beach, Kota Resort ticks the boxes for me. The more expensive cottages come with beach view and a few more luxuries such as mini bar, hot/cold showers. The Deluxe 2nd row cottages, still give a semi views of the ocean and have a terrace to sit and enjoy the ocean breezes. At the back of the resort in a concrete building they have a number of their budget fan rooms.

While probably not the best value place, what you pay for is location here. If your holiday is about lazing under a coconut tree in paradise, Kota Beach Resort pretty much gives you this. It’s just a delight to stay at such a beautiful place. For most of the year, it’s fairly quiet and peaceful. With the exception of Holy Week (Easter), Bantayan Island attracts thousands of extra tourists so the island can be swamped with crowds. During this period the resorts around the island bump up room rates by double and even triple the normal price. It’s also recommended to book well in advance. Holy Week is the busiest time of year for the island.

Kota Beach Resort vs Budyong Beach Resort

There is always the enviable comparison between these two resorts in Bantayan, simply as they sit side by side to each other and both offer beach cottages. The fact is they are pretty similar, but for me Kota has the edge, simply because the rooms are bit nicer (newer). As I have mentioned before it’s not due to maintaining the resort better but only because they had to be rebuilt after Typhoon Yolanda. Budyong Resort simply wasn’t as badly damaged after Yolanda and didn’t need the same huge overhaul.  Both resorts are fine to stay at although don’t expect luxury and I can recommend them both. Just enjoy this piece of paradise.

Things to do and see in Bantayan Island

The gorgeous Virgin Island.

The island is best enjoyed basically being a beach bum. There isn’t a lot of action save for maybe some skydiving. Bantayan has some brilliant island hopping opportunities such as the stunning Virgin Island, the less travelled to Kinatarkan Island, and even less known Mambacayao Island. The beautiful Paradise Beach is a fantastic place to visit as well – it can be reached by boat or (although a little difficult to find) by bike. The island is perfect for hiring a motorbike and exploring its beauty. Bantayan Nature Park is worth a day visit with its huge pool, fish spa, cave and mini zoo. Taking a ride to Kota Park in Madridejos in Bantayan’s north you can catch some wonderful sunsets. There is an old Spanish Fort worth visiting at the park as well.
