Glamping in Melbourne
St Jerome’s The Hotel is one hotel in Melbourne I really wanted to check out. Camping on top of a roof in the CBD of Melbourne is something I wanted to do ever since I heard of this place.
The hotel is consists of 21 tents – made up of 6 Luxe, 12 Luxe Plus and 3 Lodges. Each tent is comfortably fitted with split system heating or cooling. I stayed early September and it can still be quite chilly in Melbourne, but the heating kept inside the tent at a nice temperature. There’s a double sized bed with premium linens in the Luxe tent. The other tents come with a queen size bed. There’s robes, towels and a complimentary stocked esky with cider and beer. The Luxe is a pretty stock standard size tent, with Lodge being a lot larger at 6m x 5m. It has a couch, storage space and shelving.
At the back are the toilets, which are shared between 3 tents each. They also serve as the bathroom with a shower. There is also a sauna and chill out area. Free Wi-Fi is available as well. At the front they have their “general store” where you can get the drinks.
There’s a complimentary cocktail and evening tea and ice-cream they bring to your tent. Breakfast is served at a time you can designate, see video to get an idea of what you get in the breakfast. For me it was quite a good breakfast. There are some other goods you can order, which I’ve shown on the video.
- – Breakfast Burrito with Scrambled Egg, Fabada Beans, Cheddar, Baby Spinach & Creama (2 serves)
- – Vanilla Berry Yoghurt with Mango Coulis & Toasted Coconut
- – Whole Fresh Seasonal Fruit
- – Juice (1) and T2 Iced (1)
- – Thermos of local filtered coffee by Niccolo or Melbourne Breakfast T2 Tea
As it is in the heart of the city, during the night I did hear a little bit of the city. I heard a few sirens during the night but it’s not a deal breaker though. The bed was comfy enough and it was nice and warm in the tent.
St Jerome’s – The Verdict.
The first thing that hits you is the price, it is expensive, even if it is one of the most unique stays in Melbourne. Starting from around $400 dollars a night and up. There’s no doubting that it is an awesome experience, particularly on a special occasion with someone special. I did find for what you get, probably not the best value for money. The other services are limited, you do get breakfast and an esky with drinks as well as a free round of ten pin bowling at the next door Strike Bowling alley. When I think camping – I think campfires, marshmallows etc. – it would be nice to have something a little bit more to replicate this, even if it is fake. That aside, I did really enjoy my stay, there are a few niggly little things (which I mention in the video) but overall a great place to stay in Melbourne. If you want to do something different in town, it’s quite the experience. For me it was one of those bucket list things, now I’ve done it would I do it again? Maybe. If you are looking where to stay in Melbourne that’s a bit out of the ordinary – do consider St Jerome’s Hotel. Highly recommended.
When I booked there was only a limited range of booking sites I could find the hotel in. Other than its own website I could only find availability on the QANTAS website.
