Jumalon Butterfly Sanctuary and Art Gallery has a whole museum full of butterflies, not only from the Philippines but around the world. Here they provide a wonderfully educational and informative tour. The museum you will learn about dozen of species not only of butterflies but moths a well. See butterflies from the Philippines and around the world. The camouflaged “dead leaf” and “owl” butterflies are just amazing to see. They also have a number of the most colourful moths in the world on display.
Outside they have a garden planted with natural fauna that attracts (feeding plants) local butterflies. Here they mate, breed and allow butterflies to fly free. Here you can get up close with butterflies in all stages of their lives. See the video below for more details on this. There are some scents that butterflies are attracted to, so certain perfumes or even shampoo smells can cause them to land on your hair or body (again see video for more info on this). Unfortunately they seem to fighting a losing battle as the butterfly habitat in the area is slowly being lost to urban development. The natural fauna the butterflies feed on is disappearing. They told me some species of butterflies that used to be abundant in the garden are no longer seen. You can visit the sanctuary any time of year but the best time they told me was during the summer months.
Finish the tour at the art gallery. Here you will find works of Professor Julian Jumalon who as an artist used his creative talent to create beautiful works of art made from broken wings of dead butterflies. The works are just amazing.
Jumalon Butterfly Sanctuary is run by people who are passionate and knowledgeable about this amazing insects and it shows. Definitely one of the better tourist attractions in Cebu and well worth a visit. It’s a great way to spend a couple of hours.

To get there I caught a taxi from Ayala Center. It’s not on any main road and next to Basak Elementary School. Not all taxi drivers know of the place so you may need to write the address, even the concierge at my hotel had no idea of the place! So the place is not as well-known as you might expect. On the meter it was 125 PHP one way. I wouldn’t stay it’s easy to get taxis getting back from the sanctuary so I would recommend getting the taxi driver to wait for you. They will usually do this for an extra charge, but you may need to haggle a bit to get a good price!
Entrance Fee to Jumalon Butterfly Sanctuary is 50 P Adults/ 25 P Children
