Sumilon Bluewater Island Resort is a beautiful island resort in the south of Cebu a few hours’ drive from Cebu City. It is the sister resort of Maribago Blue water (in Mactan Island) and Panglao Bluewater in Bohol and is rated as 3 ½ star resort in Cebu. The small island is about a 10 minute ride from the mainland of Cebu, they offer a regular boat service to and from the island (at set times – see below for times).

It’s been a few years since my last stay at Sumilon and there have been vast improvements in the accommodation on the island. Before the only accommodation available were their Deluxe Rooms. They now have added some stylish Premier Deluxe Rooms giving a much needed fresh and modern feel. For even more luxury, try one of their amazing Villas. They come with a small private plunge pool, beautiful cliff views of the ocean and more spacious rooms. Even the Deluxe rooms have been progressively getting a much needed renovation and should all be completed later in 2014. If you want to try something different, they have their “Glamping” packages. If you want to sleep in a tent under the stars in a more stylish way, you may want to check out this option. They have 2 tents set up. Inside they are set up with 2 single beds, mini bar, fan, lamp and drawers for your personal stuff. Included in the Glamping package is a personalised camp assistant, commentary use of the mini bar, afternoon tea, full meals (breakfast, lunch and barbeque dinner). You can watch the video for more details on this.  If you want to use the tents only for the day, they also have a day use package (usage from 7am -5.30pm) starting from around PHP 9000.00.

Enjoy a massage overlooking the ocean or relax in the resort’s infinity swimming pool and Jacuzzi with magnificent views over the ocean. Sumilon Bluewater Resort has only one restaurant housed in the resort’s open air pavilion, again with great views overlooking the ocean.  Choose from international or local cuisine. Depending on the number of guests they may put on a buffet dinner.

Sumilon Bluewater Island Resort has plenty of activities for its guests. On one side of the island you can snorkel. I wouldn’t say it’s the best snorkelling I’ve done in the Philippines (Moalboal) but it’s ok (see video). You can also dive around the island, I don’t dive but I heard it’s pretty good.  There are kayaks you can use in the lagoon which is pretty popular. There is a trail around the island that you can do hiking. I did this myself but I recommend taking one of the resort’s guided tours. Some places are along the trails are a little bit rough with sharp coral rock. It’s a good idea to have some proper walking shoes, something I didn’t have – not one of my best ideas especially when I hiked it alone! The island has a couple of beautiful beaches as well, most iconic being the white sandbank at the front of the resort. Although some of this sand had been washed away from a typhoon a couple years ago, it’s not quite as high as it used to be. It’s still quite shallow even in high tide. The good news is from what the staff told me is the sand is slowly coming back again. Bluewater Resort also offers some whale and dolphin watching as well as the ever popular whale watching in Oslob. The resort even can organise a romantic beach picnic or even more special, you experience a romantic tropical wedding on the island.

If you wish not to stay overnight, Sumilon Island offers day packages as well.

Sumilon Island Day Use Packages

For those just wanting to stay the day only, Sumilon Blue Water has some day use packages. This has become more popular with the due to the whale shark watching activities in Oslob just a few Kms away.  A number of tourists go whale shark watching early in the morning, then head over to catch the 9.30am boat across to Sumilon Island, spend the day and then head back to Cebu City on one of the later afternoon boats back to the mainland.

Weekdays – 1500 P per person

Includes – set lunch, round trip boat transfers (Bangcogon-Sumilon V.V.), Island activities (Kayaking, Trekking and Snorkelling) and use of swimming facilities.

Weekend/Holidays – 2000 P per person (same inclusions as above)

My Review of Sumilon Bluewater Resort

This is my second time to Sumilon Island and it’s only got better. The biggest change has been to their rooms. The deluxe rooms have had a much needed make over and the newer Premier Deluxe and Villas are a much welcomed improvement. The rooms now have cable TV which on my first visit they didn’t have. It’s always exciting to go camping and the Glamping is a lovely way to enjoy the fresh ocean breezes as you sleep. I wouldn’t do it in the rainy season, but during the drier months it’s definitely something special to do. The only downer was using the communal bathroom that’s used by everyone including the day trippers.

Sumilon is a gorgeous tropical island getaway. The staff are fantastically helpful and friendly. The food was generally good. Both times I stayed here I have really enjoyed my time. I love getting away from it all, feel the fresh ocean air and the tranquillity of the island.  There are plenty of activities, or if you just want to do nothing you can laze around in a hammock with a good book. The resort is expensive so you will need to consider that when deciding. I do think it is one of Cebu’s top resorts and I like how it is an exclusive resort on the island. There is another exclusive island resort in Cebu called Badian Island, it’s still in the south but on the other side of Cebu. Of the two my preference is Sumilon Bluewater Resort, it’s cheaper and the island is more beautiful. All I can say is its amazing island I cannot wait to go back!

Overall I give the resort a rating of EXCELLENT
