Shangri La Cebu is a huge 537 roomed 5 star resort on Mactan Island in the central part of the Philippines. The resort covers some 13 hectares with landscaped tropical gardens and has its own beautiful private man made beach cove (350 meters in length). It has been well designed to be family friendly and rates as one of the best looking beaches in Mactan. Here you can lay back and sap up the tropical sunshine. There is also a 6 hectare marine sanctuary which has over 160 species of marine life. The resort offers scheduled snorkelling tours.

For water sports there are a whole range of activities to keep everyone happy. Try parasailing, sailboats, sea kayaking, jet-skiing and windsurfing.

Scotty’s the resort’s dive and action sport shop offers a whole array of water activities as well. Here you can learn to dive or try out more advanced diving courses like dive master. Other popular activities they organise are island hopping trips around Mactan. The one you should take is the one that includes both Nalusuan Island and Pandanon Island. Nalusuan for the fantastic snorkelling (I think the best in Mactan) and Pandanon for its beautiful sandy beach. The Pleasure Yacht package allows you to go fishing in the area where you can try your luck in catch Yellow Fin Tuna or Jack Fish. Also offered is island hopping trips, sunset cruises or dinner cruise on a master yacht. For the romantics there are sunset cruises to watch the sun set. Trip includes 1 bottle of wine (red or white) chips and soda. For something a bit special, there is the Picnic in the Sky Package. Here you can para-sail with your loved one. Included is a bottle of wine Camembert or Brie cheese and mixed nuts. Best done at sunset and the resort promotes it as an ideal moment for proposals or special valentine’s gift. They also offer helmet diving and glass bottom boat rides. For more information please check with Scotty’s.

The Shangri La has 2 outdoor swimming pools of different sizes. One of which has a separate “kids” area. A 6 hole golf course and tennis court.

All rooms come with modern amenities including complementary Wi-Fi, electronic safe, air conditioning, mini bar, coffee and tea making facilities and cable TV. The ocean view rooms are the more desirable rooms, although they are more expensive. Ocean Club room gives you access to the Club Lounge. Here you can enjoy complementary drinks during the day. They have a daily cocktail hour(s) and buffet breakfast is served here as well if you do not want to take it downstairs. You can see video (above) for more details.

Dining – the resort offers numerous dinning opportunities

Tides for its huge buffet breakfast/lunches and dinners – one of the biggest and best in Mactan Island.

Tea of Spring – Chinese Cuisine and 50 different varieties of tea.

Cowrie Cove – Set on the ocean and specialising in seafood.

Acqua – Italian Cuisine with homemade wood oven pizza

Buko Bar – light refreshments

Breeze – set by the beach – light refreshments

Scoops – ice-cream bar

Lobby lounge – casual dining with live entertainment nightly

For those wishing to relax, Shangri La has its CHI, the Spa (open 10am – 10pm). The Spa is set out like a secluded village with gardens, pools, baths and private villas. Indulge yourself with traditional treatments and massages from the Philippines.

Shangri La has a health club with gym, sauna, Jacuzzi, massage rooms, steam room as well as separate male and female facilities.

Business Centre – The resort has a fully equipped business centre.

For Children the Shangri La has a number of recreation facilities

The Adventure Zone (for children 4 years +) is an indoor playground area. The Toddler Zone especially for children under 3 years. The E Zone is aimed at older children with Time Zone arcade games, Xbox, sports lounge, karaoke (with over 20,000 multilingual songs) and Wi-Fi.

Getting from Cebu International Airport, the resort can organise transfers. White taxis can be caught from the airport with an approximate cost of 200 PHP. Shangri La Cebu also has daily transfers to the major shopping malls in Cebu City (see video for details). It is possible to take a taxi yourself to Cebu City – that can take anywhere between 40 minutes to an hour depending on traffic. If you take a white taxi it will cost you around 250-300 PHP again depending on traffic. As at times it can be horrendous. The resort is also walking distance to Mactan Shrine a popular tourist attraction on the island. Here you can find a statue of Chief Lapu-Lapu the guy that killed Ferdinand Magellan (a Portuguese explorer) who was sailing for the Spanish in a fight know as the Battle of Mactan. There is a maker where Magellan died. There are a number of tourist souvenirs and some Sutukil seafood restaurants here as well. These are a bit pricey as it is very touristy.

My review of the Shangri La Resort Cebu

The resort is one of the best luxury resorts in Cebu. It has been well designed and one of the best beaches I’ve seen in Mactan Island although it is man-made. The rooms are beautiful with the ocean view ones having wonderful views. The food is great (including the huge buffet breakfast). The resort is extremely popular with the Asian market. Due to the Shangri – La size it does feel a little impersonal, some of the smaller resorts the staff will get to know you by first name (or surname). I really noticed this coming from the Movenpick Resort. And like with most of the resorts in Mactan, the Shangri La Cebu is expensive. I still love my stays here and overall I’m giving it a rating of EXCELLENT.
